Husband-and-wife team David and Susan Havens founded Spare for Change in 2011 with a shared commitment to making a meaningful impact through the game of golf.
David Havens, PGA, was raised in modest circumstances in southwest Virginia. He first began playing golf as a young adult, and the game quickly became a defining force in his life. Golf supported his academic and athletic development, ultimately leading him to Virginia Tech and competitive play around the world, including stints in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Australia, and Canada. His passion for instruction later took him to the Kingdom of Bhutan in 2008, where he spent five months coaching aspiring young golfers as they prepared to represent Bhutan in international competition. In 2010, he continued this work in Nepal, coaching players at both the Royal Nepal Golf Club in Kathmandu and the Himalayan Golf Course in Pokhara.
After moving to Maui in 2004 to begin his professional golf career in Hawai‘i, David earned multiple honors within the Aloha Section PGA, including Junior Golf Professional of the Year (2012), Teacher of the Year (2013), and Golf Professional of the Year (2017). He also served as an officer and President of the Aloha Section PGA, supporting the board of directors and PGA professionals across Hawai‘i. He is currently the owner and operator of The Havens Experience and teaches at Eagle Ranch Golf Club in Eagle, Colorado, and Maui Nui Golf Club in Kihei, Maui.
Susan Havens began playing golf at age 10 in Indianapolis, Indiana. After graduating from Purdue University, she relocated to Maui to pursue a career in hospitality, where she later met David. The two shared their first date at the Challenge at Manele on the island of Lāna‘i.
Today, the Havens family operates Spare for Change from Eagle, Colorado, where they reside with their children, Savannah and Jackson.
